Iron Horse Society Marks 10 Years, Launches National Call for Volunteers to Support Steamtown’s Mission
The Iron Horse Society (IHS), the official nonprofit partner of Steamtown National Historic Site, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a two-day strategic planning retreat — and is now calling on volunteers from across the country to join in shaping the next chapter of rail preservation and education.
Held March 28–29, 2025, the retreat brought together the IHS board of directors and Steamtown leadership, including the park’s new Superintendent, Jeremy Komasz. Guided by IHS President Mike Rinkunas and Vice President Debbie Conway, the group revisited its mission, clarified long-term goals, and developed a forward-looking plan rooted in community engagement and impact.
“At Steamtown, we recognize that preserving and interpreting our nation’s railroading history takes more than just the work of the National Park Service — it takes passionate partners,” said Superintendent Komasz. “That’s why it’s my vision to work by, with, and through the Iron Horse Society. Their commitment, creativity, and connections are vital to helping us deliver on our mission in deeper, more meaningful ways — both within the park and far beyond it.”
As a result of the retreat, IHS is launching a nationwide volunteer recruitment campaign, offering both on-site and virtual roles for individuals passionate about history, storytelling, education, and nonprofit work.
Current volunteer opportunities include:
Social Media & Content Creation
Grant Writing & Fundraising
Podcasting & Storytelling
Event Planning & Community Outreach
Education, Historical Research & Interpretation
General Volunteer Support (On-Site and Remote)
“You don’t have to be a rail expert or even live in Scranton to make a difference,” said Rinkunas. “We’re looking for people from all walks of life who want to lend their time and talents to something meaningful. If you’re looking for a way to give back, build skills, or share your love of history — there’s a place for you here.”
These efforts align with IHS’s updated strategic framework, which focuses on:
Programs, Events & Public Engagement
Fundraising & Resource Development
Marketing, Public Awareness & Storytelling
Volunteer Recruitment & Organizational Growth
Strategic Partnerships & Collaboration
As a 100% volunteer-led nonprofit, the Iron Horse Society plays a critical role in advancing Steamtown’s mission and elevating the experience for visitors to one of the country’s most unique national historic sites.
