Steamtown National Historic Site in Downtown Scranton invites visitors to experience the history, engineering and cultural impact of steam railroading through interactive exhibits, historic locomotives and seasonal train rides. As one of the nation’s premier railroad preservation sites and one of the few National Park Service destinations dedicated to railroad history, Steamtown offers one of the most unique museum experiences in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Located on the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad yard, the 52-acre site preserves the machines, workshops and infrastructure that once powered America’s Industrial Revolution. Massive steam locomotives, passenger cars and freight equipment fill the historic rail yard. Museum exhibits connect the growth of rail transportation to Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal mining heritage and industrial past.

Visitors can explore the site through self-guided exhibits, seasonal excursions and ranger-led programs. Some experiences also offer behind-the-scenes access to the working restoration areas. The destination is especially popular with families, history enthusiasts and train lovers thanks to its hands-on exhibits, large open spaces and up-close access to historic railroad equipment.

Steamtown National Historic Site is open year-round, with train excursions, demonstrations and special events offered seasonally throughout the year. The site also sits adjacent to the Electric City Trolley Museum and within walking distance of downtown Scranton attractions, restaurants and shops.
